Does the exercise template auto-numbered?

Hello,

 

I entered two study questions to try out the template ‘exercise’ under the menu ‘element’.  Here is a screen shot:

 

 

Note that they both show 1.6.1.  Shouldn’t the second exercise be 1.6.2?  How do I make it auto-numbered?

They are manually numbered.
