compiling a book

Robert Belford

I wish to add a glossary to our lab manual, which is still being developed, and I think we need to first compile a book so it has front and back matter, and I thought I saw this done on the Page Setting View, but for the life of me, can't figure it out.

Is it possible to set this up so we can run a glossary in it?

We are using it as we build it.

Cheers,
Bob

Front and Back matter

Josh Halpern

The developers tab on the left hand blue bar seems to have lost the item that forced front and back matter pages onto a text. What is the way of doing this now.

Student assistant account?

Anna Mills

I have a student assistant who is helping me as part of our grant.  I would love for her to have an account that would allow her to upload updated audio files for the sections of my book.  Is that a possibility? I understand from the account creation page that accounts are only for instructors?
Thanks!

I know we need to redo them and get better image quality and is there a better option for screen capture than MS snipping tool?  I am not sure why these ones came out so bad.

Cheers,
Bob

The native screen shot systems and many alternatives render is low quality. A simple way to address this is to zoom in on the figure so it takes the entire screen and then screen shot it. Or buy the advanced version. I don't know why Microsoft doesn't update thing. I don't know about MacOS.

Bob:

You have images on different pages and one doesn't have public permission so the images from that that are not shown. I will see if I can find where you stored them (one on this page), but an easy fix is to drag and drop on this page.

This is a one-off issue, not a platform-wide issue.

Re: PDF print issues

Suzanne Wakim

We sent the link to our print shop.  One of their responses is below.

It errored out at the same page that I’ve mention to Julie also.  At the bottom of the page, it reads 5/23/2021 7.2.2.  Attached are the files how it errors out from one to another.  Also the number of pages that it stop in our Fiery print que.  I’m not so sure what it is but it stop at the same page as the one Julie submitted to me.  Maybe the file is a view only and non-printable?  I don’t know, you might want to ask IT here on campus?  Maybe the publisher and the format they save it as?

Things I've already tested:
- The print shop tried saving directly from LibreTexts and had the same issue.  They tried all the pdf options and they all had the same issue. [I think, this is what they told us and I believe them, but I don't have definitive proof].   So, I don't think it's the PDF we created.
- I tried sending a different OneDrive link, and that still had the same issue.  So, I don't think it's an issue with OneDrive settings.

Things I still need to try:
- I exported the PDF to Word and will see if they can print the Word file on Monday.
- The main issue I have is I don't have a printer at home to test this on. But, I trust our print shop folks. I think there is something about this specific pdf that isn't letting them print. This is my last guess left - that there is something about how the pdfs are generated that is causing the error.

Thank you for your help.

I am so grateful for your help, Josh.  Would you please explain what this line means:

lulu@Title of Book@Author@Institution@Title of book

1. To change the book title in Libretext, I did the steps that you mentioned and still get the error.  Here are the screen shots:   click on the pencil, and I see this screen

I typed in the revised title, and press the update title button and get this error “An error occurred while trying change the page title.” as shown here

2) where do I find the page settings for the title on the pdf book?  is this the screen:

and when I click on the PrintOPtions, here is what I see

Done.

The title on the pdf book is set by a tag in the page settings

lulu@Title of Book@Author@Institution@Title of book

You should have been able to change the title of the book by clicking on the pencil to the right of the title

You can edit the title page in the front matter just like any other page

Delmar just helped creating a campus in workforce for my book, so you don’t have to do it anymore.  https://workforce.libretexts.org/Courses/Evergreen_Valley_College/Information_Systems_for_Business

Please make sure that you point to the correct book in the business campus, if we need to keep a separate campus for the business section.

I will try to integrate with Canvas and may need your help again.

Thank you!  However, this is the wrong book.  Our book is in “workforce’.  Here is the screenshot of our book:

I sent an email to Delmar to ask for his help fixing some the figure # since they were not generated correctly.  He had helped making the final changes before the book was accepted.  Somehow, a few figures numbering are out of wack again.  There are a few other issues too that need to be corrected before I can send it to Hulu or point the bookstore the instructions.

is there any instructions how to the campus shelf?  One I download the cartridge for CANVAS, do students have to get a student account or anything else?

Do I create a campus shelf for each school where I adopt this book?  For example, I don’t want to send Menlo College’s students to EVC campus shelf?

Thanks for your patience with my questions,

Ly

Hello,

I am looking to create a course under campus bookshelves to adopt my OER book “Information Systems (Pham et al.)

I am teaching two courses at Evergreen Valley College this Fall and can use ways to Libretext instead of using the PDF of the book.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

We are trying to print our book through our printshop and they keep getting an error. They tried all the pdf download options on the LibreTexts page.  I think there may be a setting in how the PDF is being generated that isn't allowing printing.

This is a link to the PDF we would like to print.  It was generated by downloading individual chapters and combining them.  But, the same issue arises with all the other PDF download strategies (where we don't make any changes to the download at all): Butte College OER Human Biology 3rd Edition fall 2021.pdf

I am not able to login in the WorkForce library. Getting a failed login message.

I always get that same msg about a failed login.

If I click on the  Login with Libre login, somehow if I opened a second page is already logged in.  Does that make sense?

Security requires users to either use local authentication or SSO. You cannot switch between the two without tweaking your account. I switched you to SSO for all accounts and you can log in via the two-step process now.

Did someone change how we log in?  I have also been having troubles with ADAPT, but am in it now, and will be using it with  my class in 15 minutes.

Re: Error Message When Trying to Fork a Specific Page

Henry Agnew

Hello Lance,
For the page that you were trying to transclude (https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Introductory_Chemistry/Map:_Introductory_Chemistry_(Tro)/08:_Quantities_in_Chemical_Reactions/8.04:_Limiting_Reactant_and_Theoretical_Yield), it itself had a broken transclude to a PhET. It was this nested transclude that was causing the issue. In order to fix this, I just repaired the transclude to the PhET simulation and the Forker should now work normally for your sandbox page.

To: info <info@...>

Hello Delmar,

I have been in the process of working on making updates to a book in my Sandbox and every time I try to fork the page that was originally derived from:

I get the following message. I have tried importing the same page from other books in campus bookshelves that use the same page and I get the same message.

As an example, I imported this page into my sandbox:

from

and I receive the same error message.

Once again, any page that seem to be originally derived from

generates the same error message.

Could you let me know if you were able to fix this or if there is a solution.

Thanks,
LL
